Abstract

Regular monitoring of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra L.) population is one of the important aspects of the protection of this species. In the period 2012–2015 the monitoring of peripheral areas of Eurasian otter distribution and monitoring of selected Special Areas of Conservation (hereinafter SACs), with the otter as the subject of protection, took place in the Czech Republic. The monitored areas were divided by the S-JTSK grid system into quadrates measuring 11.2 × 12 km, and every quadrate was divided further into sub-quadrates of 5.6 × 6 km. Monitoring was performed using a method of checking the occupancy. It is based on the repeated checking for otter’s signs at preselected points (bridges or parts of watercourse in a maximum length of 600 m). In total, 17 SACs and 3 peripheral areas were monitored in 107 quadrates. Out of 443 monitored points, 365 points (82 %) were proved positive during at least one field survey. A total of 1,488 checks were carried out, of which 905 checks were positive (61 %). During the monitoring the presence of the otter was detected in all of the quadrates, despite the fact that the results of the occupancy of individual subquadrates could be different between particular years. When comparing the results from this monitoring with the results obtained at the same sites during the comprehensive national survey in 2011, it was found that now otters generally occupy significantly more sub-quadrates. The results confirmed the continuing trend that otters are extending their range in the Czech Republic, which has been recorded during the last 20 years.
